2017 Tucker's Summer Ride

Before leaving Danny Crawfords ride in mid July, it was discussed that there were no August wagon rides scheduled for the members of the Community Draft Horse and Mule Association. We agreed to contact Lee Tucker to see if there was a possibility that he could set up an August ride over in Scott County. We had ridden in Scott County in past years and everyone enjoyed the riding over there. Plus, this was Lee's home territory where he had grown up. For the second time this year, Lee came through and agreed to host a Saturday wagon ride starting from Bill Thompson's farm a few miles east of Sadieville, Kentucky. The word went out and a few of us arrived on Friday afternoon to camp overnight. Lee and David Hazelwood decided to take their wagons out for an evening ride on Friday. It was a beautiful evening and we got back to camp just as the sun went down. On Saturday morning, there were 7 wagons on hand when the scheduled departure time arrived. The weather cooperated and, although a cold front went through on Friday evening, it stayed dry and the humidily dropped considerably behind the front. It was quite comfortable for the ride on Saturday. In fact, we needed a campfire to stay warm on Saturday evening and on Sunday morning for those of us who had stayed and camped. The only fly in the ointment was the abundance of horseflies everywhere we went. It must be the peak of their breeding season as the females need blood in order to lay their eggs. At one point, it looked like they were a flock of birds in the air. Despite the horseflies, it was another great weekend of fun and camaraderie.
